Dr. Sharon Nance

 Sharon Nance is currently the Assistant State Conservationist for   Management & Strategy in California.  She began her career in 1995 as California’s Rural Sociologist working with the Central Valley’s Southeast Asian fruit and vegetable producers. Soon her outreach efforts expanded to include Hispanics, Native Americans and African American producers. The primary focus for the first half of her career was assisting the Historically Underserved (HU) understand and participate in opportunities available through NRCS technical & financial assistance.

Sharon is a life member of National Association of Black Natural Resource Conservation Service employees (ORG) and the American Indian & Alaskan Native Association of NRCS employees.  She is also a member in good standing with The National Organization of Women in NRCS.  As an ORG member, she has served on the Agricultural, Auction, the Small Farmer Award and Nominating Committees.  Sharon was the Regional Representative for the West Region for multiple terms. It was her honor to assist with the organizing and implementation of the National ORG Conference held in Sacramento, California.  Throughout the years she has been invited to Outreach workshops at several past National ORG meetings. And has continued her work in Outreach with the development and implementation of the NEDC course on Extending Outreach to All Communities.

Her experiences in USDA and NRCS have included working with the Civil Rights Division, Legislative Affairs Office, and the Outreach Division.  She has also detailed as a Soil Conservationist, a District Conservationist and an Assistant State Conservationist for Field Operations.  Immediately prior to the Management & Strategy position in California, Sharon was the USDA StrikeForce Coordinator for eight western states.  Sharon Nance has a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio Dominican University in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Education from The Ohio State University.  And, she earned her PhD in Rural Sociology & Agricultural Economics also from The Ohio State University.
